Switzerland has announced the launch of a three-and-a-half year pilot project to kick-start a recreational cannabis trial and, consequently, to develop a related industry that could revolutionise the whole of Europe. Leading the way will be the city of Zurich. Here is what it is all about and the possible continental implications.
The ‘Zuri Can’: the Zurich pilot project
The pilot project involving the city of Zurich will be called ‘Zuri Can‘ and will start in the autumn of 2022. The project, which will include several products, differing in purpose and THC and CBD content, will be supervised by the Psychiatric Hospital of the University of Zurich and will involve local producers who, in order to be part of it, will have to obtain a production permit from the Federal Office of Public Health to guarantee quality standards for cannabis.
The project is one of the results of the country’s legislative changes between 2020 and 2021, when the Swiss House Health Committee and the Swiss National Council met for a vote on the pilot legalisation of cannabis. The historic vote, which took place on 30 April 2021, resulted in the proposal being given the green light with 13 votes in favour, 11 against and one abstention, and complemented the regulations already in place that allowed for the sale and home cultivation of depotentiated light cannabis, i.e. with a THC content of less than 1%….
