Here’s why Raphael Mechoulam, father of cannabis research, deserves a Nobel Prize
In 2020, Israeli biologist and chemist Raphael Mechoulam succeeded in creating a new synthetic cannabinoid, known as EPM301, that could change the history of medical cannabis. Here is who he is and why, according to the scientific community, he should win the Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
Who is Professor Raphael Mechoulam
Born in 1930 in Sofia, Bulgaria, Raphael Mechoulam is a naturalised Israeli chemist and biologist. After moving to Israel with his family in 1949, Mechoulam obtained a doctorate in chemistry and then moved to Manhattan to take a postgraduate course at Rockefeller University, a private university dedicated primarily to medical and scientific research.
At the end of his studies, Mechoulam returned to Israel, where he became a member of the Weizmann Institute, one of the most important research centres in the world, and it was there that he first succeeded, in 1964, in isolating and synthesising Delta 9 tetrahydrocannabinol, the most important active ingredient in cannabis. After being appointed professor of chemistry at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Mechoulam continued his studies on cannabis by identifying cannabidiol (CBD) and cannabigerol (CBG) and isolating the endocannabinoid anandamide and 2-arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG), all milestones in the study of cannabis that led to the creation in his honour of the ‘Raphael Mechoulam Annual Award in Cannabinoid Research’, a prestigious industry award established by the International Cannabinoid Research Society.
