The goal of the University of Regina team, however, is to also focus on the treatment of acute chronic diseases.

“We believe that several cannabinoid formulations found in medical cannabis have the potential to benefit athletes suffering from acute and long-term chronic diseases that have emerged as a result of concussions,” explained Dr Patrick Neary, exercise physiologist and professor in the Faculty of Kinesiology and Health Studies at the University of Regina. The aim is twofold: ‘On the one hand, to determine whether the cannabinoids CBD and THC can be used safely and effectively for pain management and to reduce the use of prescription drugs, including opioids in post-athletes with concussion syndrome. On the other to evaluate the neuroprotective properties of cannabinoids to reduce the incidence or severity of acute and chronic concussion in professional football players’.
